about

Written in 1986 and based on a poem by Garry Knight. Garry and I collaborated on a number of songs and I set a few of his poems to music. On this occasion I came up with the tune almost instantly but Garry's very beautiful poem didn't scan. I loved the tune so much I hacked the poem to pieces and added my own verse. I don't think Garry was too pleased but I didn't care. I love this song and it's one I always return to. It's hard to believe it's 30 years old this year. I changed the title in January 2011 to I Think I'll Fly South (Kerri's Song), adding the brackets, for my friend and work colleague, Kerri Netherwood. Kerri lost the love of her life to cancer. The original song is about unrequited love but on a number of occasions it has lifted people who have lost loved ones. I love it when my songs do things like that. This recording is from rehearsals for a cancer research benefit gig that Barry organised. I told Kerri's story from the stage and some people in the audience cried. Job done, then.

lyrics

I Think I'll Fly South

I think I'll fly south for the winter
I'll set forth for warmer climes, Just like the swallow,
I'll wallow in sorrow
And think back on sunshine at times

I miss you most when it's winter
A sight of you would always warm the heart in me
But when it's cold outside
Memories unfold in my mind
And I can't forget when you were a part of me

So I think I'll fly south
But I could not deceive you
For one chance to see you
And I would fly home again

The snow's falling white in winter
It's a pain I cannot ignore
I'll fly to the south
Where the lips of your mouth
Are lost to a far distant shore
