Far Gone 03:45
Far Gone I was walking home The sun was shining A day’s work done And I was smiling ‘Cause I was gone and you had come to me Far, far gone and you had come to me I can remember A melody spinning round my head Fragile and tender The words that we left unsaid But I was gone and you had come to me Far, far gone and you had come to me Ah, can’t you tell Christine The love that’s inside me? It’s in the spell you weave The tide can’t turn in me And that’s what I believe I won’t ever leave Here is a shoulder You can lean on me And when we’re older We’ll have good memories And I am gone and you have come to me Far, far gone and you have come to me
2.
Fragile 06:12
Fragile It’s inevitable that we’re emotional It never enters a mind but some things cut like scissors Don’t argue with me, it was so obvious Old ghosts always haunt the most Old faces and obscure friends calling on the phone When we’re wrapped up in the blankets crying, ‘Leave us both alone’ Chorus For the first time in my life I feel so fragile Who are you and who am I If we’re so fragile? I can’t fucking believe this there’s a knock on the door Hush now baby don’t you cry I’ll wipe away your tears Then you can close your eyes and sleep for a million years Repeat chorus
3.
I Want Your Sweet Mouth I’m just a fragile boy I’ve got my tongue in cheek You fill my heart with joy I’ll keep on losing sleep I’ve got to get this off my chest Chorus I want your honey tongue and your sweet mouth I want your sugar kisses and your sweet mouth I’ve got to get this off my chest These are my pocket dreams Restricted by the world Wrapped (in)security This boy just wants that girl I’ve got to get this off my chest Repeat chorus If it’s April then I’m standing in the rain Here comes that jeopardy again If there’s no room for feelings I don’t try to understand I could touch the ceiling when I hold you in my hands Repeat chorus
4.
Marry Your Daughter Chorus I only saw her once In the skin and beautiful Better than a photograph She was, she was Who wants to go to New York? I’ll stay at home and marry your daughter Roses are not the only flower There’s more to life than surface detail Repeat chorus A grey light shining on my ceiling On the wing and revealing Change this like a chameleon An image to remember her by Repeat chorus
5.
Moment Passing The petals were red The leaves were green A printed betrayal To disorientate you Chorus Focus on this and make the moment last forever Beautiful dreamers Can’t beat the clock She read Berthold Brecht Beneath the summer sun Repeat chorus My brittle baby In the fickle fire There’s a chill and a tingle To disorientate you Repeat chorus
6.
7.
Too Perfect 05:20
Too Perfect These are my hands I hold you in my hands They shake with love and cynicism That would crush a brittle flower She closed her eyes And looked like an angel to love I feel like a child Who’s never understood Chorus Too perfect to love Too virgin to kiss Too peaceful to wake to the heartbeat that I missed Too perfect to love I lie still as the night She drifts further to sleep If I closed my eyes then she would seem like A world away from me Repeat chorus She closed her eyes And looked like an angel to me If love never has any evil in mind Is this life or is this a dream? Repeat chorus
8.
Smother 03:24
Smother Gases and water, minerals and metal Pigments and proteins, some feelings don’t die Why am I pushed from one side to the other? Sometimes I feel I’m going like my father and mother I feel smothered Smothered You play on my ego I choke on a feeling There’s more to this life than rocking and reeling I turned to my God but he said ‘Life is your lover’ So I held out my hand for the love of a brother And I was smothered Smothered Soon I’ll be fine I go through these crises from time to time A talking head said ‘You’re lucky the world’s getting smaller’ This morning I woke up with claustrophobia This morning I woke up with claustrophobia This morning I woke up with claustrophobia If I could just get a drink I sure I’d be all right But I sleep for the day and I work for the night Now a four-minute warning’s got me running for cover There are too many people in this life who must suffer We’re all smothered Smothered
9.
Never Talk To Me I was walking over some other bridge I was thinking over loving and living and drowning and swimming The best thing to have’s a hangover in the middle of the week I’m sleeping through this one, baby Chorus You never talk to me You never talk to me In all the things you say You never talk to me You like to play with fire but only for applause You don’t care about things like passion and pleasure and someday and never Don’t talk about the future until I’m too drunk to see I’m sleeping through this one, baby Repeat chorus Education, holidays, magazines, betting shops Ignorance, smelly perfume, winter sales, the telly’s on The lock is on the latch, they’d make a lovely match A friendly back to scratch This baby gets bigger every day, every day, every day, every day If you take for granted that philosophy is right You never ask the questions, who says? Why is? What for? And since when? All the sheep will gather, I don’t want to understand I’m sleeping through this one baby Repeat chorus
10.
Voices 03:50
Voices Love my mother Like no other Take her to my heart She left me weeping Now she’s sleeping Now that we’re apart Chorus Jesus on the television Counting out time Watching over me forever Everything is fine I can see him I can feel him Talk to the world at once In Amsterdam the Yellow vans are Everywhere at once Repeat chorus I can feel the pain The guilt, the fear, the shame I can feel the pain Here come the voices again...
11.
Your Dreamtime Refrain Drowning in your wake with no reaction You don’t ache like I ache in the right fraction Flowers of red spin round your head Your dreamtime is calling Ribbons of silver and blue following you See how the snow is falling? Repeat refrain She whispers and cries and then she sighs Like she’s saying something She won’t lose any sleep Her soul will keep until tomorrow morning Repeat refrain Is special so disconcerting? Are you colour blind? Walk a beach when your heart is hurting There are waves that you might find Repeat refrain

about

Brittle were Eddie Cooney and Paul Mahabir who began working together in 1991 after Eddie answered an ad on the notice board in Probe Records, Liverpool. They worked together for around a year, writing and arranging songs with the intention recruiting a band. They recorded over forty demos of new songs and reworkings of some of Eddie's older material. They released three cassette EPs in 1992, 'Mantra With Tremelo', 'Brittle Pop!' and 'I Only Saw Her Once' that were distributed to curious friends and family.

The recordings were made on cheap and nasty equipment and were never intended for general release, but the sound of people having fun is present here. Some recordings did not survive the passage of time so some of Brittle's best songs such as the legendary 'On The Far Side Of The Beautiful Empty' are not present and maybe lost forever. But collected here, mastered from the original lofi cassettes, is best of what remains.
